The “Manhattan Bridge Blue” walls are the exact color of the Manhattan Bridge (which is seen through the windows). On the walls, there are works from artists David Adjaye, Zoe Buckman, and Steven Siegel. The official launch was earlier this month, but Dumbo House kicked off a bit earlier with a group of founding members meant to spread the word. Being clumsy due to his ears, Dumbo is made into a sideshow attraction. When some rowdy boys started to bully Dumbo and his ears, Mrs. Jumbo spanks their leader and throws hay bales at them. Mrs. Jumbo flies into a rage, eventually dousing the ringmaster in a water tub. Dumbo is blamed for the incident, and then gets shunned by the other elephants.

DUMBO House’s interiors were decorated to echo the artist studios that have been in the area since the 1960s and 1970s. If you do get inside, remember, there’s no Instagramming your beautiful drink, no calling your friends to tell them who you saw in a cabana. Instead you can–or at least should–talk to your fellow creative humans. But the space itself sets it apart from the WeWorks of the world. And this is where those who are suckers for a good view—or suckers for a good view and roof-deck pools—will be. Eventually, the factories closed and by the 1970s the district had become a hub for artists, who used the large spaces for studios. It was this creative crowd that coined the name “DUMBO.” However, the moniker wasn’t popularized until the late 1990s. It was during that period that developer David Walentas purchased many buildings in the area. He renovated some into offices, and others into glitzy condominiums.
